Stones throw Print E-mail
Written by Mark Burton
Wednesday, 21 October 2009
dogdirt.jpgIt makes you wonder doesn’t it? A new dog waste bin no further than a stone throw away and yet the owner of the dog, who left this mess, couldn’t be bothered to clear it up.

On large, the numbers of people who walk their dogs around our community are caring and considerate folk, but sadly there are a small handful of owners who really don’t think it matters. Well it does matter and everyone should take his or her part in helping to keep our area clean and tidy.

It really is nasty stuff, not just to stand in, take home and introduce to your carpet but it may also contain diseases and parasites including a variety of zoonotic organisms capable of causing serious illness in people. Most often quoted is Toxocara canis, which can pose a significant risk to young children.

If you should see someone not clearing up after their dog, take a note of the day and time, the type of dog and the clothing the owner is wearing and report them to the dog warden on; 388799.

Who is gong to be first? Print E-mail

iac.JPGAlong with five other borough councillors, I’m taking part in ‘I'm a Councillor, get me out of here’.

I'm a Councillor is a web event which aims to help break down barriers in a fun way and get councillors and young people talking together.

It’s an opportunity for young people to engage with local democracy and for councillors to understand more about how young people feel and what concerns them. And at the same time, it also helps teachers teach citizenship in a memorable way.

The event runs for two weeks and young people, whilst at school, can use web technology to 'meet' local councillors from their area. They can ask questions and have live chats with councillors too, and then vote for their favourite to become 'youth champion' for the area.

Monday starts the second and final week of this event with the first councillor being voted off… who is gong to be first!

UPDATE: First out; Cllr Anne-Marie Curry (North Road) Second out; Cllr Alexandra Nicholson (Cockerton East) Third out; Cllr Andrew Scott (Haughton West) Fourth out; Cllr Jenny Chapman (Cockerton West)... I'm in the final! Fifth out Cllr Mark Burton (Harrowgate Hill) and the winner is.... Cllr Doris Jones (Middleton St George)

Plan for Bensham Park Print E-mail
Written by Mark Burton
Sunday, 11 October 2009
bensham_play.JPGThe image to the left is a concept plan for Bensham Park. This plan, along with play equipment to be installed in the proposed senior play area, has been put together by the landscape architects within Groundwork.

The thought behind the plan is to include some main play equipment for the 8 – 13 year olds and also create a setting where they could develop their own play too.

The creation of pods in between the proposed meadow areas would give the site a bit of character and would give the impression of walking into a different space each time. The footpaths linking the ‘play pods’ would be made by cutting an appropriate width of grass.

All going well, work should be starting on site around November and weather dependent should be completed by end ofJanuary ready for an opening in Feb/March 2010.

Little Red Rosette Print E-mail
Written by Mark Burton
Sunday, 04 October 2009
LLR_9.jpgAll residents and businesses in Harrowgate Hill should have received their copy of the Little Red Rosette, but if for some strange reason you have not please let me know. Remember; you can always download previous editions from this website on the archive page and you’ll also find copies in the Premier and Coop shop’s and in the Harrowgate Workmen’s Club.

Once I’ve gathered the most up-to-date information, taken the photographs and written each article, its over to my good friend Mike Storey and his team at Informnorth who then lovingly typeset each page - before sending if off to the printers. Harrowgate Hill is the only ward in Darlington (and quite possibly the whole of the UK) which receives any full colour newsletter… the Little Red Rosette is truly unique! There are around 2,600 households in Harrowgate Hill and with the help of many friends and family it’s normally distributed within two to three days.

If you live or are involved with any organisation, club or group in Harrowgate Hill and would like to promote yourself please do get in touch. I’m more than happy for you to take up most of the back page of the Little Red Rosette and I’ll even come along to take a photo for you and help with wording. I’m also looking for people within the organisations (and any that are not on the list) detailed on the Harrowgate Hill website under ‘Local Activities’ to manage their own content… I’ll show you how!

The electoral ward of Harrowgate Hill is uppermost North of Darlington and falls between both the East and West railway lines, is as far South as Thompson Street and as far North as the pylons which stretch across Beaumont Hill.
Harrowgate Hill is one of the biggest wards within Darlington with over 2,600 properties and more than 4,800 resident electors (not including children, young people and other unregistered voters).
