Councils are being given new powers to crack down on dangerous parking.
Local authorities with responsibility for parking enforcement will be able to issue penalty charges to drivers who double park or block dropped kerbs, transport minister Paul Clark announced this week.
The powers, which will come into effect next month, have been used by London councils for a number of years and the roll out across England follows consultation by the Department for Transport which showed strong support for the measures.
They will help wheelchair users and people with powered mobility vehicles or prams get around easily and safely, and prevent motorists blocking residents’ drives and garages.
Currently, penalties can only be given if councils have specifically indicated that parking is prohibited, with road markings or traffic signs.
Mr Clark said: “The Highway Code is clear that drivers should not stop or park in such places and we believe placing of traffic signs or markings should not be necessary.
”While we believe signs and markings are not necessary in these circumstances, we expect local authorities who want to use these powers to do so in a fair and transparent manner and publicise their plans to do so.”
He said the extension of the powers would improve national consistency by bringing the rest of the country in line with London, and help to reduce street clutter by limiting the number of signs at the roadside.
The Joint Committee on Mobility for Disabled People said it “wholeheartedly supports” the new regulations.
