Let’s get Longfield’s Community Active
Written by mark burton

Keeping FitLet’s get Longfield’s Community Active - is the message from Mr. Keith Gilbertson: Assistant Head Teacher in Specialism.

Following the success of Longfield School’s ‘Mams and Daughters’ and ‘Lads and Dads’ swimming clubs, the school would like to extend an invitation to parents, carers and members of the community to participate in even more physical activities.

As a sports college Longfield School would be extremely interested in helping to get our community active but they need to know what would best suit everyone and encourage you to join in.

The plan is to run two sessions a week, one for female members and one for males. The sessions would last approximately one to one and a half hours.

However there are some limitations to their facilities and space. The School have listed some of the activities which would be possible and welcome other suggestions which would be considered if their facilities can accommodate.

Men’s Keep Fit
Ladies Keep Fit
Pilates
Boxercise
Aerobics
Table Tennis
Trampolining
Badminton
Dance
Aqua aerobics

If you are interested in any of the above please contact the school by letter or email providing your name and preferred activity.

New parking powers unveiled
Written by mark burton
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

News from the LGA
ParkingCouncils are being given new powers to crack down on dangerous parking.

Local authorities with responsibility for parking enforcement will be able to issue penalty charges to drivers who double park or block dropped kerbs, transport minister Paul Clark announced this week.

The powers, which will come into effect next month, have been used by London councils for a number of years and the roll out across England follows consultation by the Department for Transport which showed strong support for the measures.

They will help wheelchair users and people with powered mobility vehicles or prams get around easily and safely, and prevent motorists blocking residents’ drives and garages.

Currently, penalties can only be given if councils have specifically indicated that parking is prohibited, with road markings or traffic signs.

Mr Clark said: “The Highway Code is clear that drivers should not stop or park in such places and we believe placing of traffic signs or markings should not be necessary.

”While we believe signs and markings are not necessary in these circumstances, we expect local authorities who want to use these powers to do so in a fair and transparent manner and publicise their plans to do so.”

He said the extension of the powers would improve national consistency by bringing the rest of the country in line with London, and help to reduce street clutter by limiting the number of signs at the roadside.

The Joint Committee on Mobility for Disabled People said it “wholeheartedly supports” the new regulations.

Former Shell/Tesco siteFormer Harrowgate Hill Infants School
Darlington Homes no longer plan to develop this site and currently have a view to sell to other interested parties. The site has been tidied up considerably and made much more secure and reports of nuisance behaviour have dropped too.

Former Beaumont Hill Schools Sites
There is some interest in this land. As ever, developers are very keen to new-build in Harrowgate Hill - as it is the best location with the best local facilities in Darlington and possibly the Northeast! As information becomes available I’ll post more.

Former Shell Garage
There is interest in this site. Architects have been very active there. Residents, living near to the site, have been posted details of a proposal to build a number of terraced houses. As always, Tesco haven’t been forthcoming with any details. A planning application is to be submitted to the council in June.

DrinkfieldEntrance to the Drinkfield Marsh
Some work has already been carried out to improve the footsteps through to the Marsh area and workmen are to re-attending this week to see if additional material is required to improve these steps.

Additionally a new metal kissing gate is on order and as soon as this is delivered workmen will be able to install and work out any additional fencing requirements to protect the area from motorbikes, prior to removing the old wooden structure.

It is hoped that this work will now be complete and in place by the end of May.

Arriva 6a/bBus services subsidisations
The council will be seeking tenders for the operation of a daily, hourly and evening service from Harrowgate Hill to Whinfield from the town centre after the last journey on the commercially operated service 6a/b (currently about 6:30pm from town on service 6a; later for service 6b). At this moment the timetable is being drawn up and journeys are planned to run until about 11pm-11:30pm.

The Council anticipates that this service will be in place from Sunday, 1 November 2009.  Additionally, the route will not include the Springfield loop of the daytime 6a/b as this area is already served by the 9 and would require two buses to maintain the hourly frequency.

Goal Post
Some of you may have noticed a missing goal post in Bensham Park. The Goal has been removed by workmen for repairs and is due to be re-installed this week.

Changes to bus services
Written by mark burton
Tuesday, 28 April 2009

ArrivaArriva announces a number of changes to their bus network which will come into place from this Sunday (3rd May 2009)... including;

Services 6a/b running via North Road from Harrowgate Hill Roundabout to the Town Centre and service 26 re-instated from Harrowgate Farm to the Town Centre via Longfield Road. The route has changed with buses now running via North Road between the Town Centre and Harrowgate Hill Roundabout (Service 26 will return for customers on Whessoe Road, Longfield Road and Harrowgate Farm).

The timetable has changed with the evening journeys on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays withdrawn as Arriva reports the usage was extremely low. The Sunday daytime service will continue.

Timetables for the new services are now available from the Tourist Information Centre which is situated in the Dolphin Centre. The timetables will also be available on Arriva's website at www.arrivabus.co.uk however, they are experiencing some technical difficulties with their new website and some timetables are not being displayed.

Harrowgate Farm Play Area
I’ve received complaints about the condition of the play area. The fence surrounding the play area is down, there’s broken glass and litter and the bins are overflowing. I’ve rang Street Scene today and on Thursday morning the area is to be litter picked and the bins are to be emptied too. The fence is the responsibility of Wimpy and I’ll include some information for you in the next edition of the Little Red Rosette about that.

Beaumont Hill

All three planning application have been granted. Building works are set to commence this March.

Public Inquiry - Shepherd
The Planning Inspectorate has agreed to a postponement of the above Inquiry at the request of the site owners until the 27th April as a result of the former owner's death. [Mr Blair]

Bensham Park

Work is now set to commence there during the first week of March. £30k is to be invested on the play area providing more inclusive play and new equipment.

Dog Dirt
I've received a number of complaints with regards to walkers not clearing up after their dogs. Yesterday Street Scene swept the pavements of Harrowgate Farm and next week the whole area is to be blitzed by the dog wardens. I'd like to see owners clearing up after their dogs rather than see fines being given out - please clear up after your dogs!

Local Burglary

A burglary took place last Friday afternoon in a house near to The Leas Bakery.  Access was obtained by breaking a rear double glazed window.  Please be aware and to take extra care - It appears the snow and ice does not deter burglars.

Green Lane (also known as Bridleway 21)
Will be closed from Wednesday 25th January 2010 for approximately 2 months, to allow drainage to be improved and for surface maintenance.
